Hobby Airport fixes disabled parking issues at rideshare lot after 2 Helps You investigation

Posted

It didn’t take long for 2 Helps You to get improvements for the disabled in place at William P. Hobby Airport’s rideshare lot.

In September, we first raised concerns about restroom access and the spacing of accessible parking spaces.

It started with Kevin Yackly, who contacted 2 Helps You about a problem at the lot: There was no adequate restroom nearby.

After investigating, 2 Helps You brought the issue to the attention of the Houston Airports System Aviation Director and the City of Houston.

Within days, restrooms were made available for rideshare drivers using the lot.

But that wasn’t the only problem.

2 Helps You raises concerns about accessible parking

During the initial investigation, 2 Helps You also found that accessible parking spaces were too close together, making it difficult for people with disabilities to get in and out of their vehicles.

For Yackly and other drivers who need additional room to maneuver, the limited spacing created a significant obstacle.

The airport director acknowledged the concern and committed to change, “We’ll have this fixed ASAP”, said Jim Szczesniak.

Hobby Airport makes changes to parking layout

On a return visit to the rideshare lot, 2 Helps You found that the airport had added more space around accessible parking areas, giving drivers more room to open their doors and exit their vehicles.

The changes were designed to improve access without reducing the number of available accessible parking spaces.

According to the on-site changes observed by 2 Helps You, new accessible parking spaces were added with additional room created for drivers.

Another 2 Helps You investigation leads to results

For Yackly, the changes address concerns that prompted him to reach out in the first place.

Airport leadership tells us they are not done as they are adding speed bumps.

The follow-up highlights the role of 2 Helps You in bringing consumer concerns to the attention of the people and agencies responsible for addressing them.
