INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — If you’re a fan of classic October weather, you’re about to have a very good week.

We’re locked into a textbook fall pattern that will deliver sunshine, mild temperatures, and dry conditions through the weekend and into next Monday. This is the kind of weather that makes Indiana autumns special.

THE SETUP:

Broad high pressure is building across the eastern two-thirds of North America, and it’s not going anywhere soon. This ridge extends from the Mississippi Valley all the way to the Atlantic coast, creating a dome of pleasant conditions right over Central Indiana.

The jet stream has retreated northward, leaving us in a quiet, stable pattern. Translation? Calm winds, sunny skies, and temperatures that will feel just right for this time of year.

TODAY:

Mostly sunny with highs in the low to mid 70s. Light northeast winds at 5 mph or less.

TONIGHT:

Partly cloudy with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. Calm winds.

If you’re in a river valley or near a creek, watch for patchy fog developing after midnight. Otherwise, it’s a quiet night with comfortable sleeping weather.

WEDNESDAY:

Mostly sunny with highs in the low to mid 70s. Light east to southeast winds.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY:

More of the same. Expect mostly sunny skies each day with highs in the low to mid 70s and overnight lows in the upper 40s to low 50s.

Morning fog watch: River valleys and areas near creek beds could see patchy fog early in the morning, but it should burn off quickly after sunrise.

THE WEEKEND:

SATURDAY & SUNDAY:
Mostly sunny and continued pleasant. Highs in the low 70s with overnight lows in the upper 40s.

No rain this weekend. The surface ridge over the Deep South is blocking any organized Gulf moisture from returning to Indiana, and the rainfall associated with that northern system will stay much closer to Wisconsin and Michigan.

LOOKING AHEAD: MID-NEXT WEEK SHIFT

We possibly are looking at a potential transition to colder conditions by the middle of next week. The details are still being worked out, but the long-range models suggest the pattern could shift Wednesday or Thursday, bringing cooler air into the region.
