Participants in the action are also demanding an economic stake in the technology's benefits and stronger safeguards. The SF walkout will be one of many taking place on campuses and in cities and towns around the country Tuesday.

"SF is the heart of the tech world," read a statement from the event organizers. "AI researchers, tech CEOs, politicians, Nobel laureates, and everyday Americans have been calling for an AI slowdown, but the government hasn't sufficiently responded."

Tuesday's walkout is scheduled to begin at Bayfront Park at 11:30 a.m. followed by a rally with speakers at 11:45 outside of OpenAI's office on 3rd Street.

The action is set to end around 1:30 p.m.

One of the groups behind the event, Irreplaceable, describes itself as a "people-powered movement fighting for democratic control over AI." Stop The AI Race, another group behind the event, has organized several previous events calling for a slowdown in the development of the technology.
